I grew up in Spokane, Washington, in a house where the doorbell buzzed instead of chimed and nobody ever got around to fixing it. I was the kid who unscrewed the cover to see why, which is roughly how most of my life decisions have gone since.
In my backstory I spent nine years as a low-voltage installer, running wire for doorbells, cameras and alarm panels in new-construction homes around the Inland Northwest. That meant a lot of crawling through unfinished framing, labeling cable runs and listening to homeowners describe the smart home they had seen in an ad. The gap between that ad and a doorbell that actually rings every time is where I like to work.
These days I write the guides here at Smart Home Circuit. My job is to read the install manual you threw away, the spec sheet nobody mentions and the support thread with four hundred replies, then turn all of it into steps you can follow on a ladder. I care a lot about the boring stuff: which wire goes where, why a device keeps falling off Wi-Fi, and whether a subscription is optional or just strongly suggested.
I'm blunt about hype because I think you deserve a straight answer. If a camera's best features sit behind a monthly fee, I'll say so. If a job involves line voltage and you're not sure what you're looking at, I'll tell you to flip the breaker and call an electrician, and I won't feel bad about it.
When I'm not writing, I'm usually on a porch somewhere with a cup of coffee and a strong opinion about junction boxes. If a guide here saves you an afternoon of factory resets, it did its job.
