Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 18, 2026. Effective date: October 18, 2026.
This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected or processed when you visit smarthomecircuit.com or contact Smart Home Circuit, how it is used and shared, and the choices you have. Please read it together with our Terms of Use and Disclosure.
Who we are and what this policy covers
Smart Home Circuit is a standalone informational blog about smart home devices, written in English for a general adult audience in the United States. In this policy, “we,” “us” and “our” mean the owner and operator of Smart Home Circuit, who is responsible for the site and for messages sent to it. The operator’s legal name and postal address are not published on the site, and the contact methods at the end of this policy are the way to reach the operator about privacy. This policy covers the site itself, the contact form and email sent to hello@smarthomecircuit.com, and it applies from the effective date shown above. It does not cover the websites, apps, devices or cloud services of the manufacturers, platforms and retailers we link to or write about, which have their own privacy policies. Some processing needed to deliver the site is carried out by Cloudflare, our hosting, DNS, security and email-routing provider, which handles that information under its own privacy policy and terms, as described below.
The short version
We don’t run analytics, advertising, affiliate tracking or social media pixels on Smart Home Circuit. The site itself doesn’t set cookies. A theme toggle stores your light or dark preference in your own browser, and that preference isn’t sent to us. We receive personal information only when you choose to send it through the contact form or by email. Cloudflare processes technical information, such as IP addresses, to deliver and protect the site and to check that contact form submissions come from people rather than bots. We don’t sell personal information, and we don’t share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Information you choose to send us
The contact form asks for your name, your email address, a subject and a message, and all four fields are required. The form also contains a hidden anti-spam field that real visitors leave empty, and it exists only to help detect automated submissions. If you email hello@smarthomecircuit.com directly, we receive your email address, the name shown with it, the subject, the message, any attachments and the technical header information that email normally carries, such as sending servers and timestamps. Messages often include details you choose to share about your home, such as device models, the platform you use, your Wi-Fi setup, error lights or messages and what you have already tried. Please share only what is needed to describe the problem. Don’t send passwords, Wi-Fi keys, lock or alarm codes, account recovery codes, your home address, photos or video showing other people, or other sensitive details, because email is not a secure way to transmit them and we don’t need them to answer a question. We don’t ask for health, financial or government identification information, and we would prefer that you not include it.
Information processed automatically
When you visit any website, your browser sends technical information so that the page can be delivered. For Smart Home Circuit, that request goes to Cloudflare, which hosts the site on its static hosting platform and provides DNS and HTTPS. Cloudflare may process your IP address, the date and time of your request, the page requested, your browser type and version, your operating system, the referring page and similar request and connection details. Cloudflare uses this information to deliver pages, keep the site fast and protect it against attacks and abuse, and the hosting provider may keep server-side request logs. We don’t know all the details of what Cloudflare logs or for how long, and that processing is governed by Cloudflare’s own policies. Cloudflare’s account dashboard may make aggregated traffic or security information available to the site operator, but no separate analytics service is configured on the site. When you use the contact page, Cloudflare Turnstile runs a spam-protection check that may process information about your browser, device and connection in order to tell people apart from automated bots.
Cookies, local storage and similar technologies
Smart Home Circuit does not set its own cookies. The site’s light and dark theme toggle saves your color-scheme choice in your browser’s local storage so that the site looks the way you chose on your next visit. That value stays on your device, isn’t sent to us and doesn’t identify you, and you can remove it by clearing your browser’s site data. Cloudflare Turnstile, which runs on the contact form, may use its own cookies or similar technologies as part of its spam check, and we don’t control them or have full details about them. Cloudflare may also set security-related cookies, for example to manage bot traffic or to remember that a browser passed a challenge, depending on how its protections respond to a request. We don’t use these Cloudflare technologies for advertising or analytics. No advertising, analytics or social media cookies are configured on the site. Your browser’s settings let you block or delete cookies and local storage, although blocking Cloudflare’s security technologies may prevent the contact form’s spam check from completing, in which case you can email us instead.
Information from other sources
We don’t buy personal information, use data brokers or offer social media logins. The only information we receive from other parties in connection with your visit is technical and security information from Cloudflare, such as the result of a Turnstile check that tells the form whether a submission appears to come from a person, and any aggregated or security information Cloudflare’s tools make available to the operator. If someone else, such as a relative helping you with a device, writes to us about you, we receive whatever that person chooses to include.
How we use information
We use the information you send us to read and respond to your message, to answer setup and troubleshooting questions, to consider topic suggestions and to investigate and correct errors in our guides. Common questions may inspire new or updated guides, and those guides are written in general terms for all readers without naming you or quoting your message unless you agree. We use correspondence records to follow up on a conversation, keep track of corrections and topic ideas, and handle any privacy or legal request. Technical information processed by Cloudflare is used to deliver the site, maintain performance, block spam and protect the site, its readers and its email routing from abuse. We may use or disclose information when we believe in good faith that it is needed to comply with law, respond to lawful requests, enforce our Terms of Use or protect the rights, property or safety of anyone. We don’t use your information to build advertising profiles, send marketing, add you to a mailing list or make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Legal bases for processing
Smart Home Circuit is written for readers in the United States, where most privacy laws don’t require a website to name a legal basis for each use of information. If you are in a place, such as the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, where the law requires a legal basis, the following bases best describe our processing. When you write to us, we process your message because you chose to send it and we have a legitimate interest in reading it, responding and improving our guides. Technical processing by Cloudflare to deliver, secure and protect the site and the contact form relies on the legitimate interest in operating a working and secure website. Where we must keep or disclose information to meet a legal obligation, that obligation is the basis. We don’t rely on consent for tracking or advertising because the site has none, and no purchase or account contract is involved in reading the site or writing to us.
Advertising, analytics and tracking
No analytics service is configured on Smart Home Circuit, so we don’t measure page views, sessions or reading behavior with analytics tools. No advertising networks are configured, and there are no advertising cookies, retargeting tags or ad-measurement scripts. We have no affiliate programs and no social media accounts, so there are no affiliate trackers, social sharing widgets or social media pixels on the site. The site’s template does not load externally hosted fonts, analytics, video embeds or other third-party embeds, apart from the Cloudflare Turnstile check on the contact form and any security features Cloudflare applies at the network level. Because we don’t track you across websites, there is no tracking for a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal to switch off, and the site does not respond differently to those signals. If we ever add analytics, advertising or similar tools, we intend to update this policy before the change takes effect and to describe the tools, the data they collect and any choices you have.
How information is shared
We don’t sell, rent or trade personal information, and we don’t share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We don’t share your messages with manufacturers or other companies we write about unless you ask us to or the law requires it. Service providers process information as part of providing their services to the site, as described in the next section, including Cloudflare delivering pages and forwarding messages and the email provider that hosts the operator’s private inbox. We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that the law, a subpoena, a court order or another legal process requires it, or that disclosure is necessary to protect someone’s safety, investigate fraud or abuse, or enforce our terms. If the site is sold, transferred or reorganized, messages and records may be transferred to the new owner or operator as part of that transaction, and any change to these practices would be reflected in this policy. We may also share information with your permission, for example if you ask us to pass a correction along to someone.
Service providers we use
Cloudflare provides DNS, static hosting through Cloudflare Workers, HTTPS, network security, the Turnstile spam check on the contact form and email routing for hello@smarthomecircuit.com. Cloudflare therefore processes visitor request data, contact form submissions on their way to delivery and email sent to the site’s address, under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. Messages from the contact form and email to hello@smarthomecircuit.com are forwarded to a private inbox used by the site operator, and the provider of that inbox stores and processes messages under its own terms and privacy policy. We don’t publish the forwarding address, both to protect the operator’s privacy and to reduce spam. The site is built with the Astro framework, published to Cloudflare through a publishing service, and its source code is stored on GitHub. GitHub is used to store the site’s code and is not involved in serving pages, so visiting the site doesn’t send your information to GitHub.
Where information is processed
Cloudflare operates a global network, so requests to the site and the Turnstile check may be handled in data centers in the United States or in other countries, often close to where you are. The locations where Cloudflare keeps logs, and where the operator’s private inbox provider stores messages, are determined by those providers, and we don’t have complete details. The operator’s own location is not stated on the site. If you visit or contact us from outside the United States, your information may be processed in countries whose data-protection laws differ from those where you live. This policy does not describe any separate cross-border transfer safeguards of our own, and Cloudflare describes its own transfer mechanisms in its privacy documentation.
How long we keep information
We have not set fixed retention periods. Messages and our replies are kept in the operator’s email inbox for as long as they are useful for responding, following up, tracking corrections and topic ideas and keeping a record of correspondence, or for as long as needed to meet legal obligations or resolve disputes. When information is no longer needed for those purposes, or when you ask us to delete it and we have no legal need to keep it, we will make reasonable efforts to delete it. Deleted email may remain for a time in an email provider’s trash folders or backups before it is permanently removed, under that provider’s practices. The theme preference in local storage stays in your browser until you clear it. Request logs, security data and Turnstile data handled by Cloudflare are retained according to Cloudflare’s practices, which we don’t control and whose details we don’t fully know.
How we protect information
The site is served over HTTPS through Cloudflare, which encrypts data in transit between your browser and Cloudflare. The contact form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to reduce spam and automated abuse. The site is static and has no reader database or user accounts, which limits the personal information it holds. Email routing forwards messages to a private inbox rather than publishing them, and the forwarding address is not disclosed publicly. No website, email system or online service is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of information sent over the internet or stored by email providers. Email is generally not encrypted end to end, which is one more reason not to send passwords, codes or other sensitive details. If we learn of a security incident affecting personal information, we will respond as required by applicable law.
Your choices and rights
You decide whether to contact us, and you can read the entire site without providing any personal information. You can ask what messages from you we hold, ask us to correct information, or ask us to delete your messages by writing through the contact page or to hello@smarthomecircuit.com. Because the site has no account system or reader database, the information we hold about you is generally limited to messages you have sent and our replies, and we can usually find it by the email address you used. To protect you, we may ask you to send your request from the same email address you used to contact us, or to confirm details of your earlier message, before we disclose or delete anything. If someone, such as a family member, makes a request on your behalf, we may ask for reasonable proof that they are authorized to act for you. We may decline requests that we cannot verify, that are manifestly unfounded or excessive, or that the law allows or requires us to refuse, and we will explain why where we can. Where a law that applies to your request sets a deadline, we will aim to respond within it, and otherwise we can’t promise a specific response time. We can’t act on information that Cloudflare or another provider holds under its own control, but we can point you to that provider’s privacy contact. You can control browser-side storage yourself by clearing site data to remove the theme preference, blocking or deleting cookies, or using private browsing. Because we don’t send marketing, there is no mailing list to unsubscribe from.
California privacy information
California law gives California residents specific privacy rights, but whether a particular law applies to a website depends on facts such as the operator’s size and revenue and the volume of information processed. We have not determined that the California Consumer Privacy Act applies to Smart Home Circuit, and we describe our practices here for transparency rather than as a claim that every California law covers the site. The categories of personal information we may receive are identifiers, such as your name and email address, the contents of messages you send us, and internet or network activity information, such as IP addresses and request details processed by Cloudflare. We receive this information directly from you and from your browser’s interaction with the site and Cloudflare, and we use it only for the purposes described in the section on how we use information. We don’t sell personal information and don’t share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are used in California law, and we have no actual knowledge of selling or sharing the personal information of consumers under 16. We don’t use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about anyone, and we don’t ask you to send sensitive personal information. If the California Consumer Privacy Act applies to us, California residents may have rights to know what personal information we have collected and how it is used and disclosed, to access it, to correct it, to request its deletion, to limit certain uses of sensitive personal information and to be free from discrimination for exercising these rights. You may make a request yourself or through an authorized agent by using the contact methods below, and we will verify requests as described in the section on your choices and rights. Under California Civil Code section 1798.83, sometimes called the Shine the Light law, California residents can ask about disclosures of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes, and we don’t make such disclosures. California’s online privacy law asks sites to explain how they respond to Do Not Track signals, and that explanation appears in the section on advertising, analytics and tracking. California Business and Professions Code section 22581 lets registered users under 18 request removal of content they posted, and because Smart Home Circuit has no registration or posting features, there is no posted content to remove, although a minor may ask us to delete a message they sent.
Nevada, other states and visitors outside the United States
Nevada law allows residents to ask website operators not to sell certain covered information, and we don’t sell covered information as Nevada law defines it, but you may still send such a request through the contact methods below. Several other states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, Texas and Virginia, have consumer privacy laws whose application depends on factors such as processing-volume or revenue thresholds, business size and the kind of processing a business does. If one of those laws applies to us and gives you rights such as access, correction, deletion, portability or the ability to opt out of targeted advertising, sale or profiling, you can exercise them through the contact methods below. Because we don’t engage in targeted advertising, sale of personal information or profiling, there is currently nothing for those opt-outs to stop. If a law that applies to us gives you the right to appeal our decision on a request, you can appeal by replying to our decision and explaining why you disagree. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or another place with similar laws, and those laws apply to our processing, you may have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, object to or receive a copy of your personal information, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children’s privacy
Smart Home Circuit is written for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and the site has no features that ask for age or publish content from users. If a parent or guardian believes a child under 13 has sent us personal information, please contact us, and we will delete it once we can identify the message. Teenagers interested in smart home projects should involve a parent or guardian, especially for any project involving wiring, ladders, locks or cameras.
Links to other websites and device makers
Our guides link to manufacturer sites, support pages, standards bodies, retailers, forums and government resources. When you follow a link, you leave Smart Home Circuit, and the other site’s privacy practices, including any cookies, analytics or advertising it uses, apply instead of this policy. Smart home devices, apps and cloud services often collect information about your home, such as video, audio, presence, usage patterns and network details. That collection is controlled by the device maker under its own privacy policy and settings, not by us. We encourage you to review each device’s privacy settings, data-sharing options and video or audio retention settings before and after setup. We aren’t responsible for the privacy practices of third-party websites, devices or services.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when our practices, providers or legal obligations change, and the “Last updated” date at the top shows the most recent revision. Because we have no accounts or mailing list, we can’t notify you individually, so changes will be posted on this page. If we plan to add analytics, advertising, a newsletter, comments or other features that collect more information, we intend to update this policy before the change takes effect. If we make a material change to how we use information we already hold, we will update this page and handle the change as applicable law requires, which may include asking for your consent.
Contact and complaints
Privacy questions and requests can be sent through the contact page or to hello@smarthomecircuit.com. It helps if you put “Privacy request” in the subject line. The contact form is enabled and protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, and messages from the form and to that address are set up to be forwarded to the site operator’s private inbox. Email routing was configured and verified during setup, but end-to-end delivery on the live site has not yet been confirmed by a test, so a message could fail to arrive. We can’t promise a reply or a response time, so if you don’t hear back about a privacy request, please try the other contact method or send it again. If you are not satisfied with how we handle a privacy concern, you may be able to complain to a regulator, such as the Federal Trade Commission or your state attorney general in the United States, or your local data protection authority elsewhere.
